Bloomberg: Voyager

Bloomberg’s Economic Data Business (EDB) team needed to transform the way they were working. Outdated processes were hindering the team from growing productively and slowing down the team’s ability to deliver requirements for projects.

About the project

The EDB team is responsible for the data that enters Bloomberg from various exchanges around the world. This team takes the data and translates it into requirements for the engineering team to integrate into the Bloomberg normalized system for clients to consume either through an API (BPIPE) or Terminal.

The previous method of documenting requirements to integrate an exchange was not standardized. Every product owner handled their requirements differently. Additionally, every exchange has their own set of idiosyncrasies. This combination resulted in inconsistent documentation and very little historical record about exchanges on the Bloomberg platform.

Voyager standardized the requirement gathering and has the product owner describe requirements using business value rather than technical instructions. This shift in mindset results in product owners describing the exchange’s messages in a language that is not limited by the product owners’ knowledge of technical implementation.

Value Provided

I ran the product strategy and research for the engagement. Along with my colleague, I helped manage the engineering team with backlog issue creation and roadmap management. I supported the design effort by creating mockups, prototypes, and workflows. I also worked to develop the arguments for Feature creation and prioritization securing funding for multiple phases of work.
